Barn Quilts of Carver County Catches Geocachers’ Interest

The Barn Quilts of Carver County, MN, a public art project, started in 2011, in conjunction with the Arts Consortium of Carver County, has recently caught the attention of a group of geocachers.

Geocaching is a real-world, outdoor treasure-hunting game using GPS-enabled devices. Participants navigate to a specific set of GPS coordinates and then attempt to find the geocache (container) hidden at that location. Many people use their smart phones to find geocaches. Others use a GPS to find them. There are more than 3 million active geocaches worldwide. Geocaches are hidden in 191 different countries on all seven continents (even Antarctica)! More than 642 million “Found it” and “Event Attended” logs have been recorded since the game started in 2000.There are many different types of geocaches. There is also a Minnesota Geocaching Association (MnGCA).

Last Fall, a Barn Quilt Geocaching “Adventure Lab” was started by Mary Purdham and her husband David of Eden Prairie. A Geocaching Adventure Lab is a new app and platform from the team at Geocaching HQ that allows an individual to create, play and share location-based experiences and games. The Geocaching Adventure Lab app guides players through the process of finding clues, solving puzzles, and completing Adventures one location at a time. This type of geocaching exploded in 2020 as a great past-time during the pandemic. Not everyone in the geocaching community can “create” an Adventure Lab (“AL”).  You must be awarded the opportunity to create one.

The Purdham’s were looking for something fun that was different from historical tours across the various metro cities that were becoming widely popular. They created the Barn Quilts of Carver County Adventure Lab and showcased five different barn quilts. Approximately 40 groups have visited the Carver County barn quilts since the Adventure Lab was created last September 2020.

Participants found their “cache”, took pictures, shared them with families, reminisced about farming and quilting and enjoyed visits with the farmers. They learned about the history of the farm, the barn quilts and readily enjoyed the outdoor gallery of art. To learn more about the Barn Quilts of Carver County Geocaching Adventure Lab, please visit https://labs.geocaching.com/goto/barn_quilts

The Barn Quilts of Carver County, MN continues to promote tourism bringing state-wide individuals to the County to enjoy and see what all is offered. Watch for the Barn Quilt Tours this summer, where Community, Countryside and Culture meet! https://barnquiltsofcarvercountymn.com

For more information regarding the Barn Quilts of Carver County, MN, please contact Janet Fahey, Tour Director at 612-382-4512 or Barb Hone, Author, at 612-799-8208.

ArtMatters Newsletter September

ArtMatters Newsletter September 2020 | Vol 10, Issue 9

Greetings,
We want to share what the board has been experiencing, planning and developing during these past few months of the overall shifting in how we as an arts organization can serve our members and residents in Carver County. We have had many discussions in changing our environment and needs due to COVID-19. We have had significant decreases in available funds due to event cancellations and we are functioning through reduced volunteer hours. Our desire is to keep consistency for members. Our goal is to bring more online projects on board, and also to reignite our programming through exhibits with social distancing, online class/learning opportunities in the works, retail functioning with social distancing and online sales in place, etc…. We have added very talented new board members to our already outstanding well placed team and we are excited for the new future in the new normal.

Our organization is capable and positive as we react, respond, re-strategize, recover and realize what is needed to stay connected to our member audience and our communities during this time. We are striving to build increased connectivity and economic strength through supporting our member artists, our members and our communities. With this said, you will be  one of the first to know where this will take us.  Watch for details to come….

As always, we welcome any questions, comments and/or feedback you might have. Please feel free to contact us at info@artsofcarvercounty.org.

Thank you,
Cynthia Anderson, President ACCC

Literary Committee

The Literary Committee has exciting writing and reading projects in the works for the remainder of 2020. From guest writers and presentations, distance learning assistance and “How To” videos, and writing contests/exercises, the autumn months will be busy! To kick off the new season, we give you the 48 Hour Prose/Poetry Contest for all ages participation: starting September 14, participants will have 48 hours (2 days) to complete an original prose or poetry piece and submit it to the Literary Committee via email at literary@artsofcarvercounty.org. Prose works limited to 600 words, poetry 300. All submissions must be in by 11:59pm September 16th, and the top 3 pieces will be featured on the ACCC website/social medical pages. We think this will be a great way to work on something for English class or perhaps you just needed a prompt to kick-start a new hobby; make sure to check back to the ACCC website, and Facebook page for more details as we get further into September. Until then, Happy Writing!  Literary Liaison Amy Stender literary@artsofcarvercounty.org.

Art Tourism/Barn Quilts of Carver County

A second barn quilt book has been released, Barn Quilts and Carver County, MN. It documents the expansion of the Barn Quilt Trail in Carver County. Now, 21 more Barn Quilts, all commissioned art, have been added to this “free, open-air art gallery.”
With Jerry’s stunning photography, the Barn Quilts’ creative designs and colors pop off the pages. The stories, photos, and text come from interviews by Barb Hone with each of the barn owners. Community is celebrated. Turning pages, you will visit each of the 11 towns in the County. With snapshots you will explore their highlights and the landscapes in between. Agriculture is emphasized. With photography, we carry you through this rich farmland. You will see crops and machinery. You will see seasons.
Join us for the Book Signing, September 19, 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at At the Farm, 8880 HWY 5, Waconia. The book is also available on our website www.barnquiltsofccmn.com, Amazon and Etsy.

The Barn Quilts of Carver County, a public art project, started in 2011. The Arts Consortium of Carver County was the fiscal agent and continues to be supportive of this widely popular outdoor gallery of art.  The project is celebrating its 10 Year Anniversary this year and the newly released book is a tribute to the ongoing success. Barn Quilt Tours will continue post COVID-19 and continue to bring statewide guests to Carver County.  Plan to join us for future tours, where Community, Countryside and Culture meet!

ArtMatters Newsletter May 2020

ArtMatters Newsletter Volume 10 Issue 4 | May 2020

Greetings to You

Every Arts organization is grappling with the situations we are faced with during this time of uncertainty. We are all reaching out to change our modes of operation and continue in other ways that we can connect. We have had to cancel many of our activities at the Arts Center and our events to come due to CoVid 19, but we are striving to bring a new breath of virtual programming to your table. With this in our minds we hope to add that much needed breath of fresh air to your day and look forward to the interaction between the artists, writers, musicians and members at large as we explore, express and document this change in normalcy and life as we know it. We are introducing the ACCC Pandemic Arts Journal with this issue.

Our hearts go out to the people who have been affected by this unprecedented global health event that is currently unfolding before us. We appreciate the healthcare workers, communities, governments and those on the front lines, locally and globally working to best contain this pandemic.  We keep this in our minds as we plan for the future.

We are set to reopen on the 20th of May as the State of MN’s #stayinplace order is lifted. With this, I want to assure you we have also prepared ACCC set guidelines for our volunteers and our visitors to the Arts Center and are vigilantly monitoring the CoVid19 situation closely. We want to make sure we are diligent in keeping everyone safe and ensure a healthy environment for all. We also will continue social distancing at the Arts Center during phase one of reopening and we plan to follow the State guidelines for everyone’s benefit and safety.

Please take some time out of your schedule to visit us online and in person, join us virtually or submit your perspective of these uncharted waters as we make our way into the future. We have wonderful gift ideas for the special people in your life. We have plenty of space to roam our Gallery and Gift Shop in person. We can also curate gift items for you ahead of time virtually and deliver to you curbside for your convenience. Contact us at giftshop@artsofcarvercounty.com for help with your gift lists today. Just let us know how we can serve you through the Arts.

Stay Healthy and Be Well. Cynthia Anderson, President

Barn Quilts of Carver County MN Offers Support During COVID-19 by Barb Hone, Janet Fahey and Suzanne Thiesfeld

The Arts Consortium of Carver County, a 501c(3) nonprofit organization, was the fiscal agent for the Barn Quilts project in Carver County.

Throughout this time, barn quilts have represented Carver County’s heritage and families. While the 10 Year celebration has been postponed due to COVID-19, the project has stepped up to help our community: Families, teachers and students. Barb Hone, Janet Fahey & Suzanne Thiesfeld, all original members of the Barn Quilt Project, have come together to offer unique ways to stay connected – yet apart.

We invite you to see the Barn Quilts from different perspectives. We have created barn quilt education, ideas for Independent Study related to art, literature, history, math and agriculture. Free resources, self-guided tour map and curriculum for teachers, students and citizens are available on the Barn Quilt MN website. Visit BarnQuiltsofCCMN.com to learn more.
