Important Updates

Website Updates

Thank you for your patience as we have been making updates to the website. We have been working on streamlining the website to make it cleaner and easier to navigate. Long-awaited updates include: a new and updated calendar to find our events, a new class page where you can register for upcoming classes, a page listing our season of exhibitions, and upcoming events posted on our homepage. We invite you to visit our website to keep up to date and find out more information about the Arts Consortium of Carver County.

By-Laws Update

The bylaws have officially been updated to reflect the Board of Directors’ Vote (3/26/22) & Membership Acceptance (4/21/22). The vote was for “amending our bylaws to disband Board term limits”. Official notice of the membership meeting was sent in the April 2022 ArtMatters Newsletter that was sent out on April 1, 2022. The amendment means that while board members will be elected to serve 2 or 3-year terms, they may continue to run for re-election without restrictions on how many terms they may serve. New candidates will always be welcomed and encouraged to apply in order to keep the Board energized and full of fresh ideas. Eliminating restrictions on how many terms an individual may serve allows us to enjoy ongoing great leadership without an arbitrary, forced resignation. Thank you to the members who attended, voiced their opinions, and voted.

Our current bylaws have been listed on our Board of Directors page on our website.

Artist Spotlight – Dan Arnold

I have been in and around art all my life both professionally and personally playing in many different areas and mediums. Working on bowls and birdhouses started several years ago while “Wood with Color” is a more recent endeavor. I have displayed my pieces in the past, but only now am I starting to show and sell them. Variety and imagination drive my work. I create in a number of categories using mostly found materials and letting nature be a big part of what I do. I’m taking what are common, well-known shapes and pushing those boundaries. With birdhouses, I’m looking to create visually interesting works for both birds and humans by putting art in trees, in the yard, or on the mantles. More and more of my birdhouses are being viewed as indoor art representing both art and our interest in our feathered friends. My bowls are hand-carved to expose wood grain that can only happen when you leave the conventional lathe-shaped bowl behind, creating a functional, yet very organic shape. This allows me to follow the shape that nature has laid out without restrictions. Wood with Color starts with an interesting live edge and interesting grain patterned board, with added design to fit the board’s natural personality. This piece is then cut, poured with color resin, and played with resulting in a colorful design. By day, it brings color and smiles into a room, by night enjoy the natural warm wood grain and design patterns. These pieces have the look of stained glass but allow for expanded design and color control.

Dan will be joining the Art Wander this September where you can see his work in person!

Letter from ACCC President, Mary Williamson

Mary WilliamsonApril showers were prevalent last month and spring continues its whirlwind of warm days, cool nights and a few thunderstorms to wake up the trees and tulips! The colors of spring are fresh, bright and full of new life. The ACCC reflects this re-awakening with new officers and Board Members, a new collaboration with the City of Chaska and the CCC, exciting new events this summer season and of course new supporters, volunteers & members to the ACCC.

Much like our garden perennials, the ACCC is also growing!  We are thrilled with our new, highly visible Gift Shop and expansive gallery to showcase our member’s work.  If you were waiting on a good time to sell your art, literature, or music, it is time!  We are on the cusp of publishing our online store and would love to support you on the world wide web as well as in person.  Consider submitting your art for upcoming gallery shows or inquire on leading a class to expand your reach as an artist!  Our community loves to learn from those creating! Drop into the new Gift Shop and say hello, or even better, volunteer for a shift or two each month to get to know more members and visitors!  Be well, be creative!  ACCC President, Mary K. E. All mediums are welcome, we’re excited to see the Gallery walls decked in the color Purple and all that inspires your reign!

In conjunction with the Exhibit, the ACCC is sponsoring the County wide event, Purple ReignsWe will honor Prince posthumously as our 2021 Honorary Member of the ACCC, we celebrate in his birthday month. The Chaska Human Rights Group has taken a big interest in this project. We are hoping to continue offering similar programming.  June will be the first of a series of open air gallery shows showcasing the photos and community dialogue created during the workshop.

We are offering two wonderful classes in cooperation with the Chaska Community Center.  Please check the ACCC or the CCC for more information on this exciting programming. If you’d like to teach a class, please reach out to Anne Krocak at classes@artsofcarvercounty.org.

Festivals

Purple Reigns
“Painting the County purple” is underway. Invitations have been sent to our cities, schools, libraries and chambers of commerce. Take photos of every “purple” expression and share on social media using  #purplereigns2021.

The purpose of this event is trifold:

  1. To honor Prince. The ACCC is posthumously naming him Honorary Member, 2021.
  2. To draw attention to the arts in Carver County & invite everyone to be an artist during the month of June.
  3. County-wide individuals create “community” – a healing act as we emerge from COVID.

Literary News

Summer Festivals
Are you an author who is looking for more ways to get your books into the hands of readers, whether you’re a seasoned professional or new to the summer festival scene? Join us for two great opportunities this summer! The Literary Committee is planning to have an authors booth at two local festivals this summer: The Norwood Young America Springfest Artisan Fair May 15, 2021, and ArtStock Art, Wine & Music Festival July 10-11, 2021.

This is open to ACCC members and non-members alike and there is a nominal fee to secure registration for event(s). Please contact Amy at literary@artsofcarvercounty.org for information and to register. Both events will be outdoors and in-person and will follow all Minnesota state/event organizer Covid-19 guidelines, current at time of the event, to ensure the safety and enjoyment for all in attendance.

April is National Poetry Month
A virtual Celebration of National Poetry Month will be held on April 21 at 6:30pm.  The reading will feature the winners and participants from the Adult Resident and Nonresident categories of our contest.  If you would like to hear the reading, please RSVP by April 18 to poems@artsofcarvercounty.org to receive the Zoom invitation.

We are pleased to announce the 2021 winners of the Arts Consortium of Carver County Poetry Contest. This is the 8th annual Poetry Contest sponsored by the ACCC. Our theme was Change. This year we had almost 30 entries with the largest number coming from students in grades 3-5 and from poets living outside of Carver County (Nonresident).

We read many good poems and had a hard time choosing the winners.  Congratulations to the following winners: Grades 3-5:  1st Rebekah Davison, “The Way I See”; 2nd Avery Williams, “Change”; 3rd Mari Sullivan, “Snake in the Sea.”  Grades 9-12: 1st Amelia Fischer, “Riverbed Body.” Adult Residents: 1st Jen Anderson, “Solstice; 2nd Bruce Coghill, “Moving.”  Adult Nonresidents: 1st Jeannnie L Piekos, “Becoming Again;” 2nd Micki Blenkush, “This Community Garden.”

We were especially happy with the students’ participation from classes at Victoria Elementary, Chanhassen Elementary (Mrs. Jackson’s class), and Online Learning/Carver Elementary (Jami Weber’s class) for submitting poems. Congratulations to all the students, even if they did not receive an award. The winning students will receive a ribbon to mark their honor.

All of the winning poems in every category will be published with the permission of the poet on the ACCC website. Do watch for those coming soon!

Open Readings
The Literary Committee is open to hosting Virtual Open Reading events throughout the summer, and—if the interest is there—in person readings held at the theater within the Chaska Community Center (enough space for social distancing!). If you are a published author, casual writer, writing club, poetry group, etc., please contact Amy at literary@artsofcarvercounty.org to schedule a reading event!

Music News

There still is time to submit an original song to this year’s songwriters compilation and we’re still looking for cover art for the Songwriters CD from Consortium members. Plans are to have a CD release concert in August. Direct your questions to Steve Kelzer, music@artsofcarvercounty.org.

Education

The ACCC is continuing to offer more in person and online classes for our community. We are working with the Chaska Community Center to offer fantastic programming for the whole family. We welcome all artists, writers, musicians and creatives to propose a class offering. The ACCC knows that the arts are more than a pass-time. Art allows expression, brings people together and creates a greater sense of wellbeing.  Consider joining the ACCC and supporting our mission!

Attention Artists, Teaching Artists, and Instructors
The Chaska Community Center is asking people to submit their class ideas by April 7th to be published for their May – August programming. If submitted after the date they will still be able to offer the class, however it will not be promoted in the big summer catalogue of activities.

Please go to the How to Submit A Class page on our website for instructions on how to submit your class.

Empowering Self Through Art Workshop (Zoom) 6:30- 8:00pm
Participants are enjoying great community dialogues and fun Improv Comedy.  Learning a few new photography tricks while continuing our dialogue of empowering ourselves and our community through diversity, inclusion and equity.  Each week we will be adding more depth to our conversation that will culminate in an outdoor show throughout Carver County!  You can still register for this fun filled Zoom workshop. The workshop series continues on April 1, April 8, April 15 and April 22, 2021. Read the complete details on our Classes page. Instructor Anne Krocak.

Fresh Work Group (Zoom or in person) April 14, 1:00-2:00pm
A place for artists to share their most recent creations, ideas, resources and be inspired by others. Come and enjoy – we may meet virtually via zoom or in an art studio.  Last month we had a great discussion and we would love to see more artists this month. RSVP to Anne Krocak, classes@artsofcarvercounty.org.

Succulent Wreath Workshop (in person) April 21, 6:00-9:00 pm

It’s National Poetry Month

ACCC Poetry ContestPlease join us to celebrate Poetry Month and the winners of our 2019 Poetry Contest at Writers Read Poetry, April 11 at 6:30 pm at the ACCC Arts Center in Victoria.  The theme of our contest and of the evening is “Minnesota: Our Home.”  Our special guest and contest judge, Joyce Sutphen, Poet Laureate of Minnesota, will read some of her poems, and help award ribbons to our winners.  All those who submitted a poem, the judges who reviewed them, and any others who would like to read their poetry about Minnesota (people, places, lifestyle, etc.) are invited to participate on the 11th.  Bring up to 3 poems to read if there is time.  Family and friends are invited, too!   If you have any questions, please contact Susan Coultrap-McQuin.

Visual Arts

Have you seen the Youth Art Show yet?  Do stop by the Arts Center during our regular hours to view the great talents of the students from District 112.  Their art work is wonderful!  Culture & Community is the theme of our next exhibit in the Arts Center, which will run from April 11 to June 7. Works include photography, drawing, painting and 3D. You will find it interesting to see how each artist interprets the theme.  We hope everyone will join us on April 18 for the Artist’s Reception from 6:30-8:30 in the Arts Center.  Contact Mary Strother with questions.

Starting in April, we will feature one of our member’s works, and each month another Member will be invited to show their work.  The first artist is Teresa Vining, from the Belle Plaine area.  Ms. Vining works in oil and draws heavily from her years living in Germany.  She uses much of the same scale, perspective, detail and color of the Northern Renaissance.  We are pleased to share her work in the Arts Center throughout the month of April.  Please stop by and enjoy her work.

House Concert

On Saturday, April 13th from 3 to 5pm, the Arts Consortium will sponsor a concert by Ted Hajnasiewicz at the Arts Center. 7924 Victoria Drive, Victoria. Ted Hajnasiewicz is a local Singer Songwriter who has just released a new CD called This Is What I Do.  The CD is a culmination of 30 years of song crafting. This is a sort of “greatest hits” package, compiling Ted’s favorite songs into one album to provide a relatable soundtrack for the lover, the loser, the sinner and the saint – roles we all play at any given moment in life.  Learn more about Ted Hajnasiewicz, visit tedhtunes.com.  Ted’s CD will be available for purchase at the concert. A $5 suggested donation will be accepted the night of the concert.

Annual Meeting

Classes

ACCC’s first literary class, Romeo & Juliet, taught by Barb Hone at the Arts Center, has just ended. The syllabus was completed; the students were enthusiastically engaged; and the class was honored to have guest speakers, Poet Laurate, Dr. Joyce Sutphen and Dr. Walter Cannon. Sutphen and Cannon shared their professional areas of expertise in the Renaissance and Shakespeare, respectively. The final class was a “fieldtrip” to Barb Hone’s house for a potluck brunch, a viewing of Zeffirelli’s movie, Romeo & Juliet, and the following written testimonials: “A casual approach to what can be intimidating.” “Fantastic way to learn.” “Awesome and enriching, worthwhile!” They all agreed, “Parting is such sweet sorrow.”
