Calling for Musicians and Writers

An Evening of Music & Literature
Do you like to try new things?  Would you like to be part of an evening of music and literature in a program that features both of those arts?  To participate, choose one of the following themes and create a literary piece (prose or poetry) on that theme:  1)  Starry Nights, 2)  Winter Sundays, 3)  Home Blue, or 4)  Missing You.

We’ll present those works on January 27, 2022, in the theater at the Chaska Community Center, along with music composed by musicians on the same themes.  The event is called Inspired by Winter– An Evening of Music and Literature.  The program will be created that evening so that works on the same theme will be grouped together, alternating musical works with literary ones.  Writers and performers will present just one piece each of no more than five minutes. You do not have to be a member of the Arts Consortium of Carver County to participate.  We welcome all writers and musicians who wish to participate. We are looking forward to this evening of pieces by local artists.  Mark your calendars and start writing and creating!  We hope you will join us and invite your friends!

Writers and performers will present one composition or literary work, no longer than five minutes.  The event will be open to the public.  To arrange the order of the program for that evening, we ask musicians to notify Steve Kelzer music@artsofcarvercounty.org and writers to notify Susan Coultrap-McQuin literary@artsofcarvercounty.org of your plan to participate, the title of your piece, and which prompt you chose no later than January 20.

Please arrive at the event by 6:30 pm on January 27, so that we can explain to you the order of the program and your place in it.  Any additional questions?  Please contact Steve Kelzer or Susan Coultrap-McQuin.  We are looking forward to this evening of music and literature.  We hope you will join us!

If you have any questions about upcoming Literary Events, please contact any member of the Literary Committee of the ACCC at literary@artsofcarvercounty.org or the ACCC office/Gift Shop at 952-443-3200.

Artist Spotlight – Katie Trent

Katie Trent has no formal art training, but has been working with glass for over 20 years and relies on the artistic genes passed down by her Architect dad and Fine Arts Major mom. She notes that all of her siblings create art in one form or another – from woodworking to textiles to graphic design. Katie started creating stained glass windows after taking a couple of community education classes that taught the basic techniques of creating a copper foil or Tiffany-style piece. Always the ambitious one, the second window she ever made was a full-sized 2’x4’ window insert for her parents! During these last 2 decades, Katie has learned more about creating glass art and has expanded into glass mosaics and recently, glass fusing. She continues to learn and work on new techniques inspired by her own imagination and others. Katie’s greatest fulfillment as an artist is creating a custom stained glass piece. She states “There is no better feeling than taking someone’s vision for what they want and turning it into a work of art that will be enjoyed for years to come.” Katie continues to teach classes at Glass Endeavors in Minneapolis, in her home, and at the Chaska Community Center/ACCC collaboration. You can find her on Facebook: Trent Art Glass. She also has a website that shows galleries of her work: www.trentartglass.com.

I have been working with glass for more than 20 years. Fusing glass is my latest passion, though I still love to work on commissioned traditional stained glass pieces. I keep experimenting with new techniques and ideas. I really love to teach, and look forward to sharing my expertise with the Carver County community. My classes are for anyone interested in glass as an artistic medium. Typically NO prior experience with glass is required. All you need is an inquisitive spirit and a willingness to climb outside of your box.
