“Being in the woods fills my soul.
Photography has changed the way I see the world. Suddenly I am aware of the details. I notice the colors, shadows, light and reflections. Everything around me is amplified. My pictures are eclectic but I am especially drawn to rural scenes.
I share my photographs on Instagram and have over 4000 followers. My photos have been shown on WCCO and in the StarTribune. I was thrilled when HOM Furniture purchased several of my photographs, reproduced them to look like oil paintings, and can be seen throughout their stores.”

NaNoWriMo 2022
Starting November 1st, writers all over the country will be celebrating NaNoWriMo! Not sure what NaNoWriMo is? It’s short for National Novel Writing Month, a yearly adventure for writers of all levels to challenge themselves to write 50,000 words in 30 days. If you are interested in learning more about this exciting writing event, please check out www.nanowrimo.org for more details and to register your writing project. Speaking of NaNoWriMo… there are many options around Carver county for taking part in NaNoWriMo, here are just a couple:
Special Spotlight on the Waconia Writers Group
We are writers of all genres and experience continually learning from each other as we grow as writers. We have members who are just beginning their writing journeys, members who are actively pursuing publication…. and everyone in between! Our tools range from notebooks to laptops, to cocktail napkins, to our ability to tell a story from memory.
WWG MISSION: To offer an open and encouraging environment in which to share, read, discuss and celebrate our work.
WWG VALUES: We are serious about our work but don’t take ourselves too seriously. We’re respectful, curious, supportive and – most of all – have fun with our writing.
Looking Ahead to 2023 and Call to Action!
The Literary Committee is busy working on scheduling a jam-packed year of open readings, contests, art festival appearances, classes, and more! If there are certain events you’d like to see the Literary Committee sponsor or an event/class you’d like to run, please let us know! Contact the Literary Committee at literary@
Putting together a fantastic schedule of events also takes manpower. The Literary Committee is looking for those literary-minded folks to step up and help ensure our events run smoothly. We’d love to see fresh faces on our committee with exciting new ideas! If you are interested in becoming more active in the ACCC Literary Committee, send an email to Literary Committee Head Amy Gregg at literary@
Anne Krocak, Cologne, received a grant from the MN State Arts Board and the Clean Water Land & Legacy Amendment to create a barn quilt depicting connections between disabled people and the importance of celebrating diversity in our community. The barn quilt will be installed in Carver County and a photograph of the barn quilt will be displayed on the digital billboard in St. Boni as a conversation starter with linked social media. An artist-led community forum creating a more inclusive community will happen later this year.
Anne included Artist and friend Kristin Lebben, Victoria, along with other women with disabilities, worked together to design the quilt. It was a labor of love that brought to the forefront the importance of everyone in the community. This barn quilt is dedicated to raising the visibility and voices of women who are vulnerable and those that feel they need to hide their disabilities. The quilt includes women that have been excluded from vitally important conversations that directly impact them and their communities.
The project frames the conversations around women with disabilities in a visually accessible format that is celebrated in our local community, the barn quilt. Quilts in this country have a very long history of being women’s work and an art form for the women creating them. What began as an art of necessity began to flourish into a full-blown medium that included deep symbolism and over time, slowly eroded the demarcation between craft and art. Beyond their utilitarian importance, quilts were a place to tell a visual story, create meaningful patterns, and even convey messages like for the Underground Railroad. Quilting history is one of the voiced opinions, that raised awareness, and indeed, social reform.
The Women with Disabilities Barn Quilt embraces the deep history of this art form and contributes to this tradition, using symbolism to bridge the conversation around inclusion and equity in our community.
Krocak, who has lived with multiple sclerosis for more than 30 years, understands the importance and power of moving beyond any perceived limitations and works to bring this awareness and accessibility to all of her public art pieces. Anne deeply believes that art can spur social change. Using art to bring marginalized people into the center of their community is one of my passions. She is dedicated to visually depicting the unheard voice, bringing “what matters” into public view by creating accessible interactive art pieces such as concrete sculptures/benches, mosaics, barn quilts, murals, mobiles, photographs, and interactive temporary installations. Anne has won numerous awards and created public art throughout Minnesota and the US, including the Kennedy Center in DC, Public Arts St. Paul, and ArtSage, Children’s Hospital Minneapolis/Campus, Minnesota Creative Artists and Aging Network, ArtsAge, Senior Living Communities throughout MN. In 2009 she received the Jahney-Arts Access Award from VSA Minnesota, recognizing her as an outstanding artist educator of the Year. In 2011 received a National Fellowship from VSA National and the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C.
Kristin Lebben, Victoria, who has lived with chronic pain and other disabilities her whole life, knows that when everyone contributes solutions are better. When Kristin is not creating metal sculptures or selling her photographs she is raising awareness of critical environmental issues. Kristin is an award-winning multi-modal artist who likes to ask her viewers to look deeper at her works. She knows that art has the ability to help people view things from perspectives; perspectives they otherwise may not be able to access. Lebben strives to harness this power in both her private and public pieces. Kristin has worked on many public art pieces including a stained glass project in Chicago for Habitat for Humanity, filming at the World Summit on Sustainable Development, and the “We All Belong Project” in Chaska. She has worked in photojournalism, as a photographer for an environmental group and has shown her work in the upper midwest for over 30 years.
This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.

I am experimenting with hand-built pieces in which I hand carve designs or add sculptural aspects. Looking at a slab of clay as a canvas affords many creative possibilities for my love of carving motifs of birds, bees, bunnies, and blossoms. My work consists of decorative tiles, animal sculptures, and functional pieces. My hope is that people will enjoy my pieces as much as I enjoy making them.
Inspiration comes from the wild life in the gardens and lake that surround me, as well as vacations by the oceans. I am drawn to the color of water, so you will see a range of blues, aqua & greens on my pieces. I find these colors calming and soothing, much like time spent by the water.

If you have any questions about upcoming Music Events, please contact Steve Kelzer at music@artsofcarvercounty.org
Steve Smith began composing and performing tunes at age 15 with his high school trio, modeled after his 60s folk movement heroes. He learned guitar and banjo by listening to 33 rpm albums. Then came the Beatles and his music to a turn. Years later, he teamed up with another singer-songwriter, playing original tunes in Chicago bars. One local producer claimed they were “The Alice Cooper of folk music.” But, they never wore makeup or performed with chickens. They did write many offbeat tunes. Years later, he’s still playing and composing (and writing fiction and non-fiction), and hoping to team up with some like minds.

The expressive style of painting allows me to be my authentic self. My process does not allow me to see objects, instead there exists color, texture, energy, and mark-making. I see collections of lines. I see shadows and shapes. There are acrylic paint layers and builds. I feel. I move. I paint. Shapes are left fragmented and undone. Something is left out. Something is to be filled in. At times my paintings are passages of quiet and calmness. other times they are charged and chaotic. The less blending and tidying allows for a direct experience, raw and intimate.

Website Updates
Thank you for your patience as we have been making updates to the website. We have been working on streamlining the website to make it cleaner and easier to navigate. Long-awaited updates include: a new and updated calendar to find our events, a new class page where you can register for upcoming classes, a page listing our season of exhibitions, and upcoming events posted on our homepage. We invite you to visit our website to keep up to date and find out more information about the Arts Consortium of Carver County.
By-Laws Update
The bylaws have officially been updated to reflect the Board of Directors’ Vote (3/26/22) & Membership Acceptance (4/21/22). The vote was for “amending our bylaws to disband Board term limits”. Official notice of the membership meeting was sent in the April 2022 ArtMatters Newsletter that was sent out on April 1, 2022. The amendment means that while board members will be elected to serve 2 or 3-year terms, they may continue to run for re-election without restrictions on how many terms they may serve. New candidates will always be welcomed and encouraged to apply in order to keep the Board energized and full of fresh ideas. Eliminating restrictions on how many terms an individual may serve allows us to enjoy ongoing great leadership without an arbitrary, forced resignation. Thank you to the members who attended, voiced their opinions, and voted.
Our current bylaws have been listed on our Board of Directors page on our website.

I have been in and around art all my life both professionally and personally playing in many different areas and mediums. Working on bowls and birdhouses started several years ago while “Wood with Color” is a more recent endeavor. I have displayed my pieces in the past, but only now am I starting to show and sell them. Variety and imagination drive my work. I create in a number of categories using mostly found materials and letting nature be a big part of what I do. I’m taking what are common, well-known shapes and pushing those boundaries. With birdhouses, I’m looking to create visually interesting works for both birds and humans by putting art in trees, in the yard, or on the mantles. More and more of my birdhouses are being viewed as indoor art representing both art and our interest in our feathered friends. My bowls are hand-carved to expose wood grain that can only happen when you leave the conventional lathe-shaped bowl behind, creating a functional, yet very organic shape. This allows me to follow the shape that nature has laid out without restrictions. Wood with Color starts with an interesting live edge and interesting grain patterned board, with added design to fit the board’s natural personality. This piece is then cut, poured with color resin, and played with resulting in a colorful design. By day, it brings color and smiles into a room, by night enjoy the natural warm wood grain and design patterns. These pieces have the look of stained glass but allow for expanded design and color control.
Dan will be joining the Art Wander this September where you can see his work in person!

Upcoming Gallery Show – Green Card Voices Touring Exhibit
Presented by Green Card Voices, this touring exhibit was inspired by the acclaimed book Green Card Youth Voices: Immigration Stories from a Minneapolis High School. The exhibit includes stories of lost loved ones, life in refugee camps, walks through deserts, and first snowfalls. The young people featured in the exhibit immigrated for many different reasons, but a common thread unites them; despite tremendous tribulation, they continue to work toward the futures of which they dream.

Fused Glass Heart Pendants will be offered Saturday, April 30, 9-10 am in the Chaska Community Center. In this class, participants will create 2 beautiful custom heart pendants using bits of clear and colored glass. These pendants make great Mother’s Day or teacher gifts. The pendants will be ready for pick up the following week at the Gift Shop. The cost is $25 and includes all of the materials, including a leather necklace and pretty gift wrappings for your pendants. This class is for ages 8 and up, though a younger child would be welcome with a supervising teen or adult.
Paint Pour Fused Glass Art will be held Thursday, May 19, 6:30-8:30 pm in the CCC. During this class, you will create a colorful design on glass with enamel paints to make a plate or bowl. A variety of techniques will be demonstrated and you can choose your own colors. Once dried, the instructor will fuse your designs onto a solid color base and then slump them into the mold of your choice. Your beautiful plate or bowl will be ready to pick up at the Gift Shop 1-3 weeks after the class. The cost of the class is $75 and includes all the supplies to make one piece. This class is for ages 14 and up.
