Art Tourism News

Barn QuiltBaylor Park Barn Quilt

The Art Tourism Committee has been working with the County on a barn quilt for the Baylor Regional Park barn in Norwood Young America. This newest barn quilt will join the ever growing open air art gallery of 45+ barn quilts across the County. It is projected to be installed this summer. Carver County artist, Suzanne Theisfeld has designed the quilt.

The Arts Consortium and Art Tourism Committee had previously invited the public to participate in a naming contest to “name” this latest new barn quilt. The winner will be announced at the Taste of NYA on Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at 7:00 p.m. at the Willkommen Memorial Park, in Norwood Young America.

Join us to hear the winning name and enjoy a night of food samples, giveaways, music, family friendly games and activities and more!

Elements of the quilt include maple leaves to represent the seasons and maple syrup production. Other elements represent park activities such as cross country skiing, the beach on Eagle Lake and the heavily used camp grounds.  The center image represents the popular Eagle Lake Observatory.  The cow is a symbol to the park’s agricultural history as a past working farm. Contact Janet Fahey, Art Tourism, arttourism@artsofcarvercounty.org to learn more.

Named in honor of Bill Monroe, “The Father of Bluegrass Music,” Monroe Crossing dazzles audiences with an electrifying blend of classic bluegrass, bluegrass gospel, original bluegrass and even selections outside the bluegrass genre. Their superb musicianship and on-stage rapport have entertained audiences across the United States, Canada and Europe.

For nearly 20 years this Minnesota based band has averaged over 100 shows a year. They love introducing newcomers to bluegrass music!

Monroe Crossing is made up of five very distinct personalities with differing musical backgrounds. When combined, their individual histories make for a unique sound. The three original members are: Mark Anderson (bass), Lisa Fuglie (fiddle & lead vocals) and Matt Thompson (mandolin & harmony vocals). Derek Johnson (guitar & lead vocals) joined in 2011. David Robinson (banjo, dobro & backing vocals) joined in 2012 and now performs with the band on a part-time basis. In 2007, Monroe Crossing was inducted into the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame. They have twice been selected to showcase at the annual World of Bluegrass convention hosted by the International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) and they have appeared twice at Carnegie Hall in New York City. In 2016, Monroe Crossing had the honor of being the first Minnesota bluegrass band to perform in South Korea.

The Arts Consortium and Art Tourism Committee is inviting the public to participate in a naming contest to “name” this latest new barn quilt. The winner will be announced this summer at the barn quilt installation ceremony. Date and time to be announced.

Join the fun and help name this unique barn quilt!  Send your suggested name to arttourism@artsofcarvercounty.org  by June 15th, 2021.  If you have questions, please contact Janet Fahey at 612-382-4512.

Express Yourself in Purple: Artists’ Reception and Honorary Celebration for Prince

We invite the public to get into the theme of Purple for the Express Yourself in Purple Artists’ Reception. Join us as you sip wine while you enjoy a still life painting or photography depicting grapes and wine to a sculpture painted in purple or representations of a floral garden in purple. A study in Purple….is where we’re at.  We’re excited to see you at the Gallery, where all walls are decked in the color Purple and the inspirations of our member and guest artists. Wear purple and your name is entered into a door prize drawing!

In conjunction with the Artists’ Reception, the ACCC will honor Prince posthumously as our 2021 Honorary Member of the ACCC this evening. We celebrate with live music, guest speakers and more. As his favorite color was purple… it’s natural to bring everyone together as we paint the County Purple for the month of June. Join in the County wide event, Purple Reigns. Purple Reigns is approved by the Prince Estate, Paisley Park.
