Shakespeare’s Audiences: Then & Now

You’re Invited to this Virtual Event

Shakespeare’s Audiences: Then & Now

A Shakespeare play is not really understood unless we can experience the give and take of an audience surrounding actors playing seriously with the script. The scripts that Shakespeare wrote included the audience in the performance, but that significant element has been left out of most modern performances which remove the audience to a darkened space where they can…sleep, instead of listen and respond.  Walter Cannon will discuss a number of places in a number of plays wherein the audience is built into the script, where the plays really make no sense without the audience.

The Literary Committee of the Arts Consortium of Carver County (ACCC) would like to thank all those who participated in our 48 Hr Writing Contest! “Ghost Flower” by Kara Thom

Light slices through damp earth, shameless

this grace like a knife—no syringe, pulling life

from the feeders of trees, parasite of a parasite,

numbing my heart, my hands, my lip.

Stick, nor stone, no word penetrate

with a sip of the bruisy tincture. But the bloom,

absent of chlorophyll, clusters around temples;

gray hair on the forest floor. This candle douter,

with the same power—to extinguish fire.

I, too, am most potent when I hang my head

low in translucent meditation. Just be;

appear where you are needed most.
“Sky” by Shannon Wetzel
Skies painted with slashes of lipstick red
Thunder cracking overhead
Angry clouds dark and heavy
Torrents of rain beating down on battered ground
Lightning filling the skies as jagged as a serrated knife
Quiet- clouds slowing drifting apart to reveal blue skies
Arched colors forming a rainbow on a cool summer day
ACCC Members' Show 2020

Call for Artists – ACCC Members’ Show Oct 7-Jan 23

NEW LOCATION – At the Chaska Community Center

Hello Members!

We want to share with you some exciting news, a little breath of fresh air… Our board has been continuing to think about and plan, how we can approach a new normal during this time. One of the things that comes up more than others during these past few months is how we can serve our members and residents in Carver County and do it safely. Through our many discussions in changing our environment and needs due to COVID-19, we are moving our Gallery Exhibits to the Chaska Community Center. This will increase the number of shoppers and visitors to our Center which will be beneficial to Holiday sales. The environment is large and open so we can provide a much safer space for members, shoppers, and guests.

Although we have had significant event cancellations and we were functioning through reduced volunteer hours earlier this year, we are moving forward! We have a great connection and are welcoming the openness that the Chaska Community Center provides. Our desire is to keep consistency for members. We are working to bring more online projects on board as well as some socially distanced activities. We look to reignite our programming through exhibits with social distancing, online and in class/learning opportunities in the works, retail functioning with social distancing and online sales in place, etc. We have an exceptional team of board members and volunteers and we are excited for our new future in the new normal.

We are capable and positive as we react, respond, re-strategize, recover and realize what is needed to stay connected to you, our member audience, and our communities during this time. Many people are ready to re-explore the arts and programming, and we are here for them and for you.

As always, we welcome any questions, comments and/or feedback you might have. Please feel free to contact us at info@artsofcarvercounty.org.

Thank you,

Cynthia Anderson, President ACCC

P.S. If you would like to be an instructor for in person or online classes you can learn more by visiting our How to Submit a Class page.

Call for Artists
ACCC Members’ Show 2020

Calling all ACCC Artist Members! Please join us at the ACCC Gallery in the Chaska Community Center (CCC) for our opening Members’ Show. We want to feature all your fabulous works of art! Most work will be available for purchase. Buyers are now ready to enjoy art while socially distancing, that’s why we are partnering with the Chaska Community Center Arts so we can provide plenty of space to browse the Gallery and discover works of art to include paintings, sculptures, pottery, jewelry, photography, literary and more! We look forward to seeing you at the Center in Chaska. All media is welcome.

Do you have a short piece of prose or a poem that is framed or on a canvas and prepared for hanging on a gallery wall? The ACCC and its Literary Committee are continuing the initiative to display short literary works along with art in the Members’ Show. Any writer who wishes to display a poem, flash fiction, or another short literary work, prepared for hanging on a wall, can submit it under the “Other” category in the Members’ Show guidelines.  Your writing must use at least 16 font size. Note that items in the show must be for sale.
