ArtMatters Newsletter Dec 2020

ArtMatters Newsletter

Welcome to the ACCC ArtMatters Newsletter for December 2020

Greetings,
As we reflect on this past year, we remain thankful. We are humbled by the good we see in our community. We are grateful for the support and friendships in our close-knit community. And, we thank you for being part of the ACCC family. On behalf of the Board of Directors, we wish you all a safe, healthy and happy holiday season.
All the best,
Cynthia Anderson
ACCC President

The ACCC participated in the #GivingTuesday campaign on December 1, 2020. If you missed it, you can still donate through December 24th!

GivingTuesday is a global generosity movement, unleashing the power of people and organizations to transform their communities and the world.
GivingTuesday was created in 2012 as a simple idea: a day that encourages people to do good. Over the past 8 years, this idea has grown into a year-round global movement that inspires hundreds of millions of people to give, collaborate, and celebrate generosity.

We rely on donations, sponsorships, memberships, grants, and contributions to support our initiatives and programs throughout the year. We work to fulfill our mission of elevating the arts within our communities. If you’d like to make a year-end donation, we have open arms for your support. We accept donations from individuals, families, charitable funds, estates, charitable organizations, businesses, schools, government agencies and nonprofits. You don’t need to be an artist to support the ARTS!

As a 501(c)3, the Arts Consortium of Carver County is a registered charitable organization. Your Donation should be 100% tax deductible. Please verify with your accountant. Thank you for your support!

You can still donate to our #GivingTuesday campaign through December 24th via our website.

Welcome to ArtMatters Newsletter Nov 2020! We have several announcements and volunteer needs, thank you for reading!

Artists’ Reception Event a Success!

It was so wonderful to welcome our Member Artists and all the guests to our first Artists’ Reception in our new space at the Chaska Community Center. We loved being able to see everyone – socially distanced and masked up – again! If you haven’t done so yet, be sure to come to the gallery located just outside of the Theater in the CCC. It is open when the Community Center is open. The show is beautiful and an outstanding example of the work our artists are doing in Carver County. Attendees to the reception got to have a sneak peek at the new Art Center as we are busily getting ready for opening on November 4, along with the Holiday Show.

Visit the Members’ Show Exhibit at the Chaska Community Center now through December 28, 2020. The works are located in the hallway near the Theater. Enter through the main entrance and turn right down the hallway.

Literary News

Our virtual reading by Minnesota Poet Laureate, Joyce Sutphen, on Oct. 19 was a great success. Joyce did a wonderful job of reading and telling us about her poems. There was an opportunity in the end for some questions and answers. We have received many positive comments about the evening.

Our second virtual event will be held on Nov. 10 at 7pm via Zoom. Walter Cannon, Professor Emeritus of Central College, will talk about Shakespeare’s Audiences: Then and Now. He will discuss how Shakespeare expected the audiences of his plays to be involved, unlike the way in which the audiences sit away from the stage in the dark these days. If you are a fan of Shakespeare, you will want to hear this talk. You may register for the event by emailing literary@artsofcarvercounty.org no later than Nov. 8. The Zoom link will be sent out to those who register. The talk is designed for all who love Shakespeare, whether you are now a student or if you are an older lover of Shakespeare. Please join us for this event and invite your friends to participate also. Professor Cannon will answer questions after his talk.

Literary Liaison, Amy Stender literary@artsofcarvercounty.org.

Music News

We are in the planning process to be able to showcase music events at the Chaska Community Center performance space. All ACCC Music CDs are available for purchase at the ACCC Arts Center or on our website as a physical CD or now downloadable! All proceeds benefit the ACCC. Music Liaison, Steve Kelzer music@artsofcarvercounty.org

Thank you Barb Kelzer

The entire ACCC Board and Volunteers would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Barb Kelzer for being our Volunteer Coordinator since the ACCC first opened our Arts Center in June 2018. Due to COVID-19, Barb has recently “retired” from this volunteer position. Barb has been a reliable pillar for the Arts Consortium and kept us humming along by keeping the Art Center open, staffed and organized. She has been invaluable to the arts in Carver County and we thank her for her significant and generous contributions. Best wishes and much love, Barb.

We are currently seeking a new Volunteer Coordinator. This position uses a fantastic, easy to use app called Sling to keep everyone managed. See details below.

Seeking Volunteer Coordinator

This is an exciting time for the ACCC as we recently moved to the Chaska Community Center, in Chaska MN. In addition to our studio and gallery, we host many successful art fairs, music performances, and literary events.

We are currently seeking a Volunteer Coordinator to join our growing and thriving Consortium group. This is a volunteer position, with the following responsibilities:

  • Use the system we have set up, with the fantastic app called Sling, to schedule volunteers
  • Overseeing the development and coordination of the volunteers for the Arts Center
  • Overseeing the training and support of volunteers
  • Ensuring volunteer coverage of center during core business hours and Arts Center classes and special events
  • Working with the Operations and Center Administration Committee to ensure successful volunteer staffing of Arts Center
  • We are not asking you to recruit volunteers, but rather to follow up with those who have already raised their hand to become a volunteer

For further information, please contact Janet Fahey, Board Member or visit our website.

The position requires a minimum monthly time commitment. If you think this opportunity is right for you, please send a message of interest and summary experience information to Janet Fahey, Consortium Board Member at janetfahey@embarqmail.com.

Desired experience:

  • Customer Experience
  • Past scheduling or staffing experience
  • Volunteer experience through nonprofit work

No criminal history.

We desire all of our staff to have a strong passion for the Arts.

The Arts Consortium of Carver County is Moving to the Chaska Community Center

The Arts Consortium of Carver County is moving our Gallery & Gift Shop into the Chaska Community Center to provide much needed socially distanced space for artists, members, shoppers and guests. We plan to open with the Members’ Show Exhibit in the gallery of the Chaska Community Center. The ACCC Members’ Show opens October 7, 2020.

This move allows the ACCC an opportunity to increase the impact for members, artists and the communities of Carver County by partnering with the Chaska Community Center. The theater, the gallery and larger space will allow for more art to be displayed as well as being able to hold more functions to showcase local live music and literary readings. The Holiday Market featuring local and regional artists is set to open November 4th.

We have a great connection and we welcome the openness that the Chaska Community Center provides. We are working to bring more online projects on board as well as some socially distanced activities. We look to reignite our programming during the COVID-19 pandemic through exhibits with social distancing, online and in class/learning opportunities in the works, retail functioning with social distancing and online sales in place, etc. We have an exceptional team of board members and volunteers and we are excited for our new future.

Creating Through COVID

Mary WilliamsonAs the Board has been adjusting and keeping up with all of the changes we are experiencing due to change in physical location as well as COVID, we have been working towards a couple new interactive platforms.

Online education has swept across the world as students and businesses have needed to accommodate their employees in training or students in schools.  As a non-profit, we are no different, we want to continue to add value to your experience with the ACCC.

As an art instructor I have realigned my own teaching to online.  It has allowed me to stay in touch with students and continue their lessons as well as reach so many more than I ever could have by myself in my studio. If you’d like help coordinating an online class to teach, please reach out to us at classes@artsofcarvercounty.org with your ideas. We can help bring your craft, skills, technique or instrument to our audience. You can also learn more on our How to Submit A Class page.

ArtMatters Newsletter September

ArtMatters Newsletter September 2020 | Vol 10, Issue 9

Greetings,
We want to share what the board has been experiencing, planning and developing during these past few months of the overall shifting in how we as an arts organization can serve our members and residents in Carver County. We have had many discussions in changing our environment and needs due to COVID-19. We have had significant decreases in available funds due to event cancellations and we are functioning through reduced volunteer hours. Our desire is to keep consistency for members. Our goal is to bring more online projects on board, and also to reignite our programming through exhibits with social distancing, online class/learning opportunities in the works, retail functioning with social distancing and online sales in place, etc…. We have added very talented new board members to our already outstanding well placed team and we are excited for the new future in the new normal.

Our organization is capable and positive as we react, respond, re-strategize, recover and realize what is needed to stay connected to our member audience and our communities during this time. We are striving to build increased connectivity and economic strength through supporting our member artists, our members and our communities. With this said, you will be  one of the first to know where this will take us.  Watch for details to come….

As always, we welcome any questions, comments and/or feedback you might have. Please feel free to contact us at info@artsofcarvercounty.org.

Thank you,
Cynthia Anderson, President ACCC

To kick off the new season, we give you the 48 Hour Prose/Poetry Contest for all ages participation: starting September 14, participants will have 48 hours (2 days) to complete an original prose or poetry piece and submit it to the Literary Committee via email at literary@artsofcarvercounty.org. Prose works limited to 600 words, poetry 300. All submissions must be in by 11:59pm September 16th, and the top 3 pieces will be featured on the ACCC website/social medical pages. Until then, Happy Writing!  Literary Liaison Amy Stender literary@artsofcarvercounty.org.

Art Tourism/Barn Quilts of Carver County

A second barn quilt book has been released, Barn Quilts and Carver County, MN. It documents the expansion of the Barn Quilt Trail in Carver County. Now, 21 more Barn Quilts, all commissioned art, have been added to this “free, open-air art gallery.”
With Jerry’s stunning photography, the Barn Quilts’ creative designs and colors pop off the pages. The stories, photos, and text come from interviews by Barb Hone with each of the barn owners. Community is celebrated. Turning pages, you will visit each of the 11 towns in the County. With snapshots you will explore their highlights and the landscapes in between. Agriculture is emphasized. With photography, we carry you through this rich farmland. You will see crops and machinery. You will see seasons.
Join us for the Book Signing, September 19, 10:00 am to 3:00 pm at At the Farm, 8880 HWY 5, Waconia. The book is also available on our website www.barnquiltsofccmn.com, Amazon and Etsy.

The Barn Quilts of Carver County, a public art project, started in 2011. The Arts Consortium of Carver County was the fiscal agent and continues to be supportive of this widely popular outdoor gallery of art.  The project is celebrating its 10 Year Anniversary this year and the newly released book is a tribute to the ongoing success. Barn Quilt Tours will continue post COVID-19 and continue to bring statewide guests to Carver County.  Plan to join us for future tours, where Community, Countryside and Culture meet!

We are excited to have both of these talented and energetic women join the ACCC Board of Directors!

Online Art Classes

As the landscape of how we ‘do business’ has changed, we have been educating ourselves in order to continue to educate others. The ACCC Board has elected to offer online art lessons as well as pursue an online shopping experience. We are in the process of setting up platforms for both endeavors and look forward to the possibilities and opportunities it will offer our artists, members and ACCC followers! If you are interested in offering an online art lesson in visual, literature or musical arts please contact us with your proposed lesson. Visit our How to Submit A Class page on our website for details or send your questions to classes@artsofcarvercounty.org. Stay Safe, Stay Well, Stay Creative!

Active Literary Committee

The Literary Committee is pleased to welcome Amy Stender as the next Literary Liaison for ACCC.  Amy brings a long list of accomplishments as a fiction writer and is eager to hear from you about your ideas for activities involving and supporting authors during the pandemic. She will be working with a committee that consists of local authors Jim Kane, Sheri Kramer, Anne Jackson, Mona Smith, and Susan Coultrap-McQuin. If you have suggestions for Amy or would like to join the Literary Committee to help plan and host events, please contact Amy at literary@artsofcarvercounty.org.

Sincere Thanks

We want to thank Susan Coultrap-McQuin for her unmeasurable contributions to the ACCC while serving on the board. Her term as board member included roles as Secretary, serving as the Literary Liaison and being on the Operations Committee. While this may seem like a lot, it does not even come close to accounting for her dogged determination to ensure the highest standards were always met in everything she did, her unflagging energy at moving the ACCC forward and upward and her wise counsel in guiding the arts in Carver County. Susan, from the bottom of our hearts, we thank you.

Art Tourism/Barn Quilts of Carver County

Recently, a vibrant, new barn quilt has been installed in Watertown, MN. Kathy McCann is the owner of the farm and the quilt pattern is the Mariner’s Cross (also called the Nautical Star), which symbolizes “hope” and “a fresh start”. The design is a symbol of a sailor always able to find his way home.

Being the first barn quilt in Watertown, we have met with the Mayor, Steve Washburn. He was very interested in the art and the economic development aspects of the barn quilts in Carver County. When COVID-19 permits, Coach buses will again be filled with 55 enthusiastic art and agriculture-lovers. Tours will include Watertown and guests will be having lunch at a local eatery. Watch for the Barn Quilt Tours, where Community, Countryside and Culture meet!

NEW! Student Memberships

Hello, I’m Mary Williamson, a new ACCC Board Member. As we are navigating the new ways of doing things in the ACCC, one area remains the same. Membership and who that is made of? As I was accepted onto the Board a few months ago, I was simultaneously working on an Art Membership for my own Studio, with a strong focus on young adults. A passion of mine is teaching, especially youth. In the ACCC the focus on new members, art enthusiasts and artists alike, are geared more towards adults. The young adults have not had a seat at the table, yet.

During our recent Board meeting, I proposed inviting young adults to join the ACCC in a Student Membership. The Board met the idea with enthusiasm, and we are working on adding this option for students between the ages of 14 and 18.

This demographic is currently under-served in the real world in the area of support and opportunity outside of their high school environment. With the membership, they would have an opportunity to not only invest in something in the collective sense but invest in themselves. They would be able to join at $25/year, we are working on determining an amount of in person volunteer time they would serve each year as well as the perks – low entry fee for first art exhibit for instance.

In the short term, the thought behind this is to give passionate young adults a chance to be a part of something bigger than themselves, allow them to participate fully in the organization, see how they can influence and affect others with their art and reap the benefits of personal growth and life skills. In the long term, many of these young adults hold skills that we can only aspire to. Having them become full members at this younger stage in life will allow them to grow, participate and share their skill sets and experiences with the ACCC and more importantly remain in the ACCC as their passion for art potentially becomes careers in art and therefore become vested supporters of the ACCC hopefully for life.

This is an untapped demographic with so much potential, I will be working on some marketing to get the word out, share with the public, home and non-traditional schools as soon as possible. I am excited about what they will bring to the ACCC table, there is so much to learn from them, as well, we as a strong, supportive community can mentor and support them.  Just thinking about the new technology that the young artists are growing up using boggles my mind, with the pace of change they will be a great asset to our Membership. If you would like to discuss this with me, please send an email to membership@artsofcarvercounty.org.

Announcing Volume VI of The Songwriters and Musicians of Carver County CD

The Songwriters and Musicians of Carver County, Volume VI CD is finished and we are waiting for the finished product from the duplicator. This year we have 24 songwriters featured. The first song on the CD was written by Grace Bury in 1942. Grace was a piano teacher in Chaska for many years. The recording of her song was done by her son John Bury and his trio featuring Sue Drude on vocals in the early 70’s. It still sounds fresh and hip today. A lot of the music on the CD was written in 2020 with artists from age 18 to 72. Watch our website and email for the official announcement of when and where you can purchase the CD. Thank you to Steve Kelzer for your continued work to produce this valuable ACCC project. We all are looking forward to hearing the recordings! Steve Kelzermusic@artsofcarvercounty.org.
