Flash Fiction Call for Submissions by February 23, 2019

“Flash Fiction” Contest… a VERY short story

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

This is a call for submissions for the 2019 flash fiction contest sponsored by the Arts Consortium of Carver County (ACCC). Participants do not need to be residents of Carver County or members of the ACCC.

The theme for the 2019 Flash Fiction Contest is A SURPRISE DISCOVERY. Stories must be 600 words or less.

Date
Contest begins Jan. 1, 2019

Deadline for Submissions
February 23, 2019

Details
The theme’s three words, A SURPRISE DISCOVERY,  do not have to be used in the body of the story.

All entries must be submitted to: flashfiction@artsofcarvercounty.org.

  • Submit PDF files only. Hand written entries will not be accepted.
  • Give us your best new work.  We will not accept stories previously submitted to an ACCC flash fiction contest.
  • One story per entrant. We will consider the submission of a story as implied permission to publish the story on the ACCC website. Authors retain all other rights.
  • Entrants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Judges will determine the top three entries. Winners will be announced prior to the ACCC Annual Meeting.

Remember, flash fiction should tell a complete story, with a clear beginning, middle and end. Entries should focus on one event or situation and involve only one conclusion, which should come as a shock, surprise or feeling of satisfaction. Try to limit the number of characters and set your story within a well-defined space. The theme for this contest should lend itself well to first-person narrative, though this is not a requirement. The essential quality of this genre is its limited scope which leads forcefully (yet logically) to an impact.

Barb Hone Shakespeare

William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet Class

New Class Starting Tuesday, January 15, 10:30-11:30am

Barb Hone will teach an 8-week course on William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. This tragedy is the core of the class, but the class will also provide a capsulized history of drama: the worldview as the Middle Ages tumbled into the Renaissance; Shakespeare, the man, the playwright, the poet; and the culture of the Elizabethan Era.

The cost is $65/student and includes the book. Register by January 10, 2019.

Details and Registration is on our Classes page.

Questions, contact instructor Barb Hone.

After the class…

Romeo & Juliet

The ACCC’s first class in the new Art Center in Victoria just ended. The syllabus was completed; the students were enthusiastically engaged; and we were honored to have guest speakers, Poet Laurate, Dr. Joyce Sutphen and Dr. Walter Cannon. Their professional areas of expertise – the Renaissance and Shakespeare, respectively!

The final class was a “field trip” to Barb’s house for a potluck brunch, Zeffirelli’s movie, Romeo & Juliet and the following written testimonials: “A casual approach to what can be intimidating.” “Fantastic way to learn.” “Awesome and enriching, worthwhile!”

Classroom – art & community. Appreciation, sharing perspectives, research and laughter. “Parting is such sweet sorrow.”

Thanks, Barb Hone

Details
Listeners might hear a piece debating “Happy Holidays” versus “Merry Christmas,” warm poetic recollections or even this, from an Army veteran: I spent Christmas Eve 1969 in a below-ground sleeping hooch with mortar shells raining down on our firebase. Three other men huddled with me, and I have to confess it was impossible in those moments to embrace “Peace on earth, good will towards men.” One heavy shell exploded very close, knocking a music box my wife had sent me off the little shelf above my cot. It began playing “Silent Night,” an enormous incongruity as we waited for the next blast. It never came, as though divine command had interceded. We sat there amazed, listening to that tinkling box. And it was exactly what each one of us needed to hear.
